AWTY? Extra: Charlie
When Edward and Charlie first met, a few people commented on Charlie’s change of attitude. This confused me, because up to this point, the only time Charlie appeared in the story was when he spoke on the phone with Bella and the short, awkward conversation they had when she first showed up at his house.
My guess is that readers interpreted Charlie’s attitude on the phone to be the norm for him, and I can understand that. There are also a lot of fics out there that feature a Jake-loving/Edward-hating Charlie, and I’m not surprised that some people assumed this attitude applied to RfH.
Keep in mind that when Charlie spoke to Bella (and subtly threatened Edward with a shotgun) over the phone, he spent the past day thinking she was kidnapped only to find out she actually ran away with a boy. He was angry because he was scared. He was angry because, though typically responsible, she acted young and stupid. He was angry because she was fine and all that worrying and use of time and resources was for nothing.
Charlie wants what any father wants for his daughter—to live life and be happy. Sure he and Billy are best friends and he’s fond of Jake. But he recognizes all of that means nothing if Bella doesn’t want to be with Jake. Also, look at what happened to Charlie and Renee. I don’t think there’s a father out there who would want his daughter to be with her first boyfriend forever just because he likes him.
Let me finish by saying that I’ve always disliked it when people post long A/Ns in their FFn story defending their characters, but now I understand. It’s not defending, it’s clarifying. And I chose to do it here in my blog, which no one probably visits anyway, because that’s what blogs are for, right?
Now, onto the outtake! What exactly was Charlie thinking before he met Edward?
