Story Rec: The Worst of Weather
Today I’m going to rec what might just be my favorite AU fic, The Worst of Weather by YellowGlue.
Bella comes home for Christmas break from her freshman year away at university to be unexpectedly all shaken up. Snideward. Spitefulward. Slightly Darkward. Rated M for lemons and fluffiness in future chapters.
Twilight – Rated: M – English – Angst/Romance – Chapters: 9 – Words: 52,741 – Published: 12-1-09 – Bella & Edward – Complete
I was hooked from the first chapter of this story when Bella was drunk and woke up to Edward sniffing her up. It was hands down the hottest thing I’ve ever read, and for something relatively unsexual, that says a lot.
Oh, and he gets drunk off of her intoxicating scent. Yes, vampire Edward—drunken and stumbling.
This story is refreshing because, unlike most AU fics, it takes place after Edward and Bella have already met. It jumps right into the plot as opposed to spending time introducing the characters and having Bella discover what the Cullens are, etc.
I also really like how YellowGlue held back the details of what happened prior to the setting of the story and sprinkled them in throughout. None of my questions went unanswered, but I didn’t truly know what had happened until reading the whole story, adding to the suspense as a whole.
Not only that, but YellowGlue freshens up the plot by changing the dynamic of Edward’s ability. Edward can read only Bella’s thoughts, but he must be touching her in order for it to work.
Now, if you like The Worst of Weather (and you will—SNIFFY, DRUNKEN, SPITEFUL EDWARD, hello?), there is also Rose Like Thunder which is the same story told from Edward’s POV.
Edward’s POV of a plotline parallel to “The Worst of Weather”. Snideward. Spitefulward. Slightly Darkward must face the consequences of his choices. M for lemons and fluffiness in future chapters.
Twilight – Rated: M – English – Angst/Romance – Chapters: 9 – Words: 85,272 – Published: 2-12-10 – Bella & Edward – Complete
Edward is dark, he’s angry, and he’s hurting, and while I was reading it, I could feel all of his emotions. YellowGlue has a poetic flow to her writing, but it’s not distracting, and it was easy for me to slip into Edward’s mind and feel his pain. And the greatest thing about the story is that, even though it covers the same period of time as TWoW, it doesn’t feel the least bit redundant.
Having read them both, I would definitely recommend starting with TWoW and reading RLT second.
. . . Why are you still here? Go!
