{story rec} Written in the Stars (aka Tailward)
When I first saw a tweet from Jadalulu about Tailward, I was positive her auto correct had gone rogue and started making shit up. Either that or it had some other meaning. Certainly it didn’t mean tail as in an actual tail. Because that would be creepy. And weird. And creepy.
But that’s exactly what it meant.
Edward is king of a dying race, his planet torn by civil war. Bella is abducted to become his bride. From college student to Queen… Can she learn to love this strange man and help save his people? AU/OOC. Rated M for lemons, violence and mature themes.
Okay, so Edward is an alien. I am not a fan of sci-fi. It holds no interest to me. And I most definitely didn’t know how I felt about Edward, our precious Edward!, with a tail. So out of morbid curiosity, I began reading.
And I freaking love it!
Like seriously, I can not remember ever flailing over a story this badly. It’s consumed almost every thought I’ve had since I began reading it on Friday. As for the tail? I love the tail. It’s practically its own character. The tuft of hair on the tip won me over.
But there is so much more to this story than the tail!
One of my favorite things about fanfic is when authors use canon traits and scenarios and weave them in a way that is completely original and unpredictable, yet still works. (The absolute best example I can think of is And with Thee Fade Away by Derdriu oFaolain.)
Lissa Bryan is applying those traits, not to vampires, but to alien races. They are in the Forx Galaxy. There are Alphas and Betas. Dynali and Volturi are different species. Even *gasp* alien babies, which if you think about it, is a hell of a lot more logical than a vamp/human hybrid.
Edward is not human, and unlike his canon counterpart, this Edward never was a human. His instincts and way of life are different than Bella’s, and it makes for a very interesting dynamic between the two.
There’s also a politic focus to the story. Now, if you would have told me that I was going to fangirl over a sci-fi story about politics, I would have laughed. Then punched you in the face. I’m not interested in that kind of stuff. At all. Whatsoever. But it just goes to show how brilliant the writing is! She has taken both aspects and managed to write it in a way that is captivating. And for god’s sake, Edward has a freaking tail!!1!
I highly, highly recommend this story. If you’re looking for something different and refreshing, this is it! If you think this sounds crazy… well, it kind of is. But think about all the crazy stuff out there in fanfic. Give it a try, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised. :D
