A light filtered from the beneath the door to Carlisle’s office. I could hear the low murmuring of voices. Curiosity got the best of me, and I crept down the hallway.

Edward and his father were talking about business. It didn’t pique my interest, but as I turned to go back to my room, the name of my apartment complex followed by the phrase “delinquent account” captured my attention.

“She’s over five months past due,” Carlisle said. “That is not acceptable.”

My heart was in my throat.

“What was I supposed to do? I can’t kick her out!”

“Evictions are part of your job description. If you can’t handle that task, I will gladly find someone who can.”
